18世紀になるとラムはイギリス海軍の支給品となった。しかしラムは強い酒だったため、エドワード・バーノンという提督は水割りラムを支給することにした。部下たちはこの薄いラムのことを、グログラムという生地でできたコートを着ていた提督のあだ名からグロッグと呼ぶようになった。現在でも水割りラムはグロッグと呼ばれ、泥酔することはグロッギーという。日本で使われるグロッキーという言葉は、このグロッギーがなまったものである。
