日本の新聞記者……というとムカツクので新聞社員は、出世すると経営者側になるわけじゃないですか。朝日新聞の社長や役員、部長になることが、自分の人生の頂点。でも海外メディアの記者は違っていて、どこの新聞社にいるのかは関係なくて、最終的にはフリーになり、自分の本を出すなどして、ジャーナリストとして世間に認められることが頂点なんですよ。
日本の新聞社員と海外メディアの記者との間では明確にゴールが違っているので、そもそも話がかみ合わない。日本の新聞社員の頂点は社長かもしれないが、海外の記者の頂点は社内では編集主幹やコラムニスト、それよりもフリーランスの方が上。なので海外では「ニューヨーク・タイムズで働いているからすごいですね」なんて思いもしない。けど日本では「朝日新聞で働いているんですか。すごいですねえ」といった価値観になってしまう。
