作品の価格はどうか。著名作家は20万～数億円、新人は数万～数十万程度である。特徴的なことは価格の変動だ。美術品の価格は作家が存命なうちは変動しやすい。作品価値が定まらないからだ。近代美術や日本画では他界した作家が多く安定的に高値がつくことが多い。

　傾向としては海外のコレクターは好んで現代美術を買う。リスクは大きいが、値上がり益も見込めるからだ。これに対して日本のコレクター、特に公立美術館は保守的だ。リスクを避けて現代美術よりも近代作品を購入しがちだ。
