現代美術の作家の数はどうか。日本には現在3万人の画家がいる。そのうち約１％の300人程度がプロ、つまり作品制作のみで生計を立てている人といわれる。既に亡くなった人も入れて明治以降の作家で“値のつく作家”をカウントすると600名前後になると推計され、これがおおむね我が国の現代美術作家の人数と見られる。
